CM/ECF Filing Tips and Terms

1.

Adobe Acrobat

Application used to create and view PDF documents.

To ensure you can view the PDF document verify the following setting is activated:  Edit- Preferences – Categories/Internet – Display PDF in browser.

2.

BNC

Bankruptcy Noticing Center (BNC) serves all Bankruptcy notices, orders, and certain Plans.

The Bankruptcy Noticing Center serves these documents daily in paper format.  The BNC can serve documents in electronic formats:  1. fax; 2. Email with PDF attachments; 3. Electronic Data Interchange (EDI).

Browse

A Windows operation of navigating through directories via mouse allowing selection of specific file.

Browser

A software program providing a user-friendly interface to access information on the Internet.  The browser program interprets Hypertext Markup Language (HTML) documents delivered from Web servers.  Mozilla Firefox 3.5 and Internet Explorer 7 or 8 can be used with CM/ECF.

Category

In CM/ECF, a category is a classification of similar docket types, such as Motion/Applications.  Category selections appear as hypertext links under the Bankruptcy and Adversary menu selections.

Check Box

A box the user clicks to include choices from a list.  Check boxes are designed so you can choose one or more items from a list.

7.

CM/ECF Menus

The CM/ECF filing system has two filing menus:  Bankruptcy and Adversary.

Selecting the appropriate menu for the proceeding type displays the appropriate categories to file the document.  Example:  when filing a Motion, select the Bankruptcy or Adversary menu and then select, Motions/Application.

Default

A default is a common suggested value displaying on a CM/ECF screen.  You can accept the default or choose another option unless otherwise directed in the procedures.

9.

Docket Events

The Docket Event represents the document that you are filing electronically.  The docket events are listed either in alphabetical order or by category.

For step-by-step assistance, refer to the online procedures and select the event names.

10.

Drop Down Box

An alphabetical list of selections.  Drop down boxes are used through CM/ECF to list party names and docket events.  When you see the selection you want, click to highlight it. 

To make multiple selections, hold down the control key and scroll to the second (third, etc.) selection and click to highlight.

11.

Hypertext (HTML) Link

A URL embedded in an HTML (hypertext markup language) document(s) underlined.  This permits the user to move from one area (or topic) to another in a Web based program.

12.

Internet Browsers

You can use Mozilla Firefox 3.5 or Internet Explorer 7 or 8 to access the CM/ECF system.

Open Text Box

An area in a CM/ECF docket event allowing addition of data to the docket text by manually typing in the text box. 

All docket events do not allow manual addition of data; only events built with an Open text box allow addition of data.

PACER

PACER is used to access CM/ECF reports.  There is a charge for viewing all documents in CM/ECF.

Access the PACER Service Center at http://pacer.psc.uscourts.gov.

Party Role Type

When adding a new party to a case, verify the “Role” type is correct.  Example:  when adding a creditor, select Creditor role type.

19.

Radio Button

A round selection button used to choose from a list.  A radio button allows the selection of one (1) item only.

20.

Redaction Message

Once you login to CM/ECF and before you can begin docketing you must check a box indicating:

I understand that if I file, I must comply with the redaction rules.  I have read this notice.

The Notice states:  IMPORTANT NOTICE OF REDACTION RESPONSIBILITY:  All filers must redact: Social Security or taxpayer-identification numbers; dates of birth; names of minor children; and financial account numbers, in compliance with Fed. R. Bankr. P. 9037. This requirement applies to all documents, including attachments.

21.

Refer, Link, Relate Documents to Main Document

When filing case documents related to another document, link it back to that document.  The rule of thumb is to relate objection, supporting documents, etc. to the initial document (usually a motion or application) unless the procedure states differently.

Linking documents back to other documents makes it easier to locate on the docket and review in reports.

Timed Out

If the CM/ECF system has been idle for more than 20 minutes, it automatically times out.  To log in again, type your password at the prompt.

25.

URL

Abbreviation for Universal Resource Locator.  URLs are the naming scheme used to find web pages.  A URL is similar to a street address.  The URL for the Iowa Southern CM/ECF Training Database is:
